Guided Climbing Adventure with Mount Mission School & CACC

ree

In Spring of 2025, the Central Appalachian Climbing Coalition (CACC) had the incredible opportunity to take students from Mount Mission School in Grundy, VA, on a guided outdoor climbing trip—an experience made possible through funding from the 2024 Cumberland Forest Community Fund. With 20 participants and perfect fall weather, the day was full of adventure, teamwork, and smiles.

A First-Time Climbing Experience for Many

For most of the students, this was their first time tying into a rope and climbing real rock. With expert instruction from the professional guides at Rock Dimensions (Boone, NC), everyone learned the basics of climbing safety, technique, and trust—both in the gear and in themselves. It was amazing to watch students overcome nerves, encourage one another, and celebrate each success along the way.

You could feel the energy throughout the day—cheers from below as climbers reached the top, laughter between attempts, and that unmistakable mix of excitement and pride that comes from trying something completely new.

Powered by the Cumberland Forest Community Fund

This unforgettable trip was fully funded through our recent award from the 2024 Cumberland Forest Community Fund. Their support allowed us to remove financial barriers and give local youth a chance to connect with the outdoors in a meaningful way. Opportunities like this can be life-changing, showing students that outdoor adventure and the incredible natural beauty of Southwest Virginia are right in their backyard.

Looking Ahead

We’re so grateful to Rock Dimensions, Mount Mission School, and all our volunteers for making this experience possible. It’s partnerships like these that help us build stronger connections between people and the outdoors.

At CACC, we’re excited to create more opportunities like this—especially for youth and community groups who might not otherwise have access to climbing. We can’t wait to plan the next adventure and continue sharing the joy, challenge, and community that climbing brings.

About CACC: The Central Appalachian Climbing Coalition (CACC) works to preserve and promote climbing access in Southwest Virginia. We’re passionate about building community, expanding outdoor opportunities, and inspiring people of all ages to get outside and explore the incredible climbing resources of our region.
